It seems that condo units for sale in Manila are being sold in fun-sizes. Nowadays, the average size of a condo ranges from 24 sq. meters to 27 sq. meters. In Western countries, they call it “launch pads,” “nano units,” “urban flats,” or “innovation units,” Mother Nature Network (MNN) shares. We call it “studio-type” in the Philippines. Roughly, it is larger than a one-car garage but smaller than a two-car garage.
Perhaps you can squeeze in a single bed, a single sofa, and a table with two chairs. Then there’s a tiny bathroom and you’re lucky enough if there’s a sink in the corner. The Urban Land Institute has a brief definition of a micro unit based on their study entitled “The Macro View on Micro Units.” Its working definition is a small studio apartment, typically less than 350 square feet (32 sq. meters), with a fully functioning and accessibility compliant kitchen and bathroom. Considering this cramped setting, should this stop you from buying one? It should not because there are ways to solve this tiny problem of yours.
Before we head to that part, what are the advantages of living in a micro-condo? The monthly rent of micro-condo unit costs lower than a conventional studio because of its size. Moreover, Apartment Therapy says, it is easier to clean; less furniture, more savings; and you’re oblige to de-clutter because there is no way you can hide it in such small space. The last maybe is the “best” of them all. However, micro units are ideal for single persons with a steady income.
Let us now get to our main dilemma. How can you live in a “shoebox” of a condo? We will show you how as you need to see it to believe it. As you go through, you can pick up a few techniques here and there.
This is one of the sample units at Zoku in Amstermdam called the Zoku Loft. The building itself is a hybrid of a home and an office. The average size of a Zoku Loft is 24m2 or 24 sq. meters. The unit consists of a king-sized bed, fully-equipped kitchen, a large kitchen table, shower area, and a living area. It has a large window so you won’t feel a little claustrophobic and natural light could enter during daytime. It is redesigned by an architectural firm named Concrete.
Is the picture above a closet or a condo unit? Believe it or not, it is the latter, yup, you’re looking right now at a typical room where you can sleep, eat, and bathe. And it is only 8 sq. meters. This one’s from Paris and custom-designed by Kitoko Studio. Think: Doraemon-style of sleeping. You may watch the video below on how it functions:
The previous example is the same as this one but wait till you check out the bed, which is the part of a unit that usually takes too much space. By the way, it is only 24 sq. meters.
Neat, isn’t? It is a collaborative work of Christian Schallert, a photographer based in Barcelona, and Barbara Appollini, an architect.
Look at the image above, particularly the cabinet inside the room. If you’re planning to live in a 41 sq. meter unit, you will never consider buying a bulky cabinet in the first place.
Have you ever heard of multifunctional furniture? Like this one:
This is the “Unfolding Apartment” by Normal Projects that can be divided into three “rooms” as shown above.
One of the techniques to make your tiny apartment livable is to utilize space; left, right, up, down, and under your floorboards. Check out the images below:
This is the YO! Home. It is a 39 sq. meter condo unit designed by Simon Woodroffe, a designer/entrepreneur.
